I would like to be baptised
Baptism is the beginning of life with Christ and the Church. Preparation helps you take this step with understanding.
Where should I begin?
- Start attending servicesYou may come to church, listen to the service and pray before you are baptised.
- Learn about the faithRead at least one Gospel, the Creed and the commandments of God. Write down any questions that arise.
- Discuss preparation with the priestAfter these first steps, discuss further preparation. A date for Baptism is agreed after preparation and a conversation.
Confession and Communion before Baptism?
If you have not been baptised, you do not yet take part in the sacraments of Confession and Communion. The requirement to confess and receive Communion before a child’s Baptism applies to Orthodox parents and godparents.
I have already been baptised
Baptism is not repeated. If you were baptised in another Christian denomination or do not know the circumstances of your Baptism, discuss your situation with the priest first.
What should I bring?
An Orthodox baptismal cross, a baptismal garment, a towel and a change of footwear. A cross and garment can be obtained at church. Please clarify practical details during preparation.
How much does Baptism cost?
The sacraments of the Church have no price. Any voluntary personal offering of thanks is given directly to the priest, not transferred to the parish bank account or PayPal.
What happens after preparation?
After completing the steps above, discuss what comes next with the priest.
