Sisterhood
The sisterhood is a community of women in the parish who follow the path of Christian service together under the spiritual guidance of the rector.
The spiritual meaning of service
At the heart of the sisterhood is growth in love for God and our neighbours. Prayer, participation in the sacraments and practical help belong together: through service, the sisters learn patience, mercy and mutual support.
From the regulations for sisterhoods of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia:
“The purpose of the Sisterhood is to help its members grow morally in Christian virtue according to the teaching of the Russian Orthodox Church, under the pastoral guidance of their rector and in close connection with the life of the Church. At the same time, the Sisterhood as a whole provides active help to its Church and practical support for the work of the parish.”
What the sisterhood does
Caring for the church
Cleaning, preparing vestments and decorating the church.
Feasts and shared meals
Organising meals for the Twelve Great Feasts and other major feasts, and helping with parish events.
Charitable work
Helping people in need, supporting children’s homes and taking part in local charitable events.
Visiting and support
Visiting sick parishioners and supporting those who need attention and help.

How the sisterhood is organised
The head sister is elected by the sisters for three years and represents the sisterhood on the Parish Council. The rector provides spiritual guidance.
The sisters meet several times a year to discuss their work and plans. There are also informal social gatherings. A WhatsApp group is used for coordination and announcements.
